But before you start planning your dream itinerary, one important question usually comes up:
How much does a trip to Greece cost?
The answer varies depending on several factors including the time of year you travel, the islands you visit, and your travel style. Budget travelers can explore Greece for surprisingly little, while luxury travelers can easily spend thousands staying in cliffside hotels overlooking the Aegean Sea.
I’ve been traveling to Greece almost every summer of my life. Using my own vast experience, as well as research, I have created this in-depth guide, where I’ll break down the real cost of visiting Greece in 2026, including:
- Flights to Greece
- Hotels and accommodation
- Food and restaurants
- Ferries and transportation
- Activities and tours
By the end of this guide, you’ll have a clear idea of how much to budget for a trip to Greece and how to plan an unforgettable trip without overspending.

Average Cost of Visiting Greece in 2026
Before diving into the details, here is a quick overview of typical travel costs.
According to travel cost data from Budget Your Trip, the average daily cost of visiting Greece is approximately $255 per person, although you can definitely visit Greece and spend less. As a family of 5, we certainly aren’t spending over $1000 a day and we also rent a car for at least half of our trip every summer.
Here’s what a typical one-week trip to Greece might cost:
Budget travelers: $1,400 – $1,800
Mid-range travelers: $2,200 – $3,400
Luxury travelers: $4,500+
These estimates include flights, hotels, meals, ferries, and activities. Prices can vary significantly depending on when you are traveling, where in Greece you travel to and where you are traveling from, as someone traveling from Europe may spend only $100-$200 on a flight to Greece, whereas someone from North America or Australia may spend $1000 or more. Also traveling with other people can also affect your costs. A double or triple room will work out to less per person than a single room.
Pro tip: If you’re looking to save money, mainland Greece and smaller, lesser known islands tend to be less expensive. Islands like Santorini and Mykonos can be 2 or 3 times more expensive than other islands like Crete, or Naxos. You can read my Greek Island Guide here.
If the thought of exploring the mainland sounds intriguing to you, then you can learn more in my 14 Day Mainland Greece Itinerary and Most Beautiful Mainland Towns in Greece posts.
Flights to Greece
Flights are usually the largest expense when calculating how much a trip to Greece costs.
For travelers coming from North America, round-trip flights to Athens typically range from $600 to $1,200 depending on the season.
According to Skyscanner, the cheapest months to fly to Greece are usually March, April, and November, while flights are most expensive in July and August.
Typical Flight Prices to Greece
Toronto → Athens: $900 – $1300 CAD
New York → Athens: $600 – $900 USD
London → Athens: $100 – $200
If you’re planning to visit multiple islands, it can also be worth checking multi-city flights where you arrive in Athens and depart from another island. If you are traveling from Europe and don’t plan on visiting Athens, be sure to check if direct flights are available from your departing city to the island you’d like to visit (Note: Not all islands have airports).
Visiting Athens is one of the highlights of any trip to Greece. Entrance to the Acropolis currently costs around €20, making it one of the most iconic yet affordable historical sites in Europe.
Tips to Find Cheap Flights to Greece
Book flights early. The best deals typically appear 9-10 months before departure.
Travel during shoulder season. May, early June, and September offer great weather with lower prices.
Use flight comparison tools. Google Flights and Skyscanner are excellent for tracking price changes. I always find better prices on Skyscanner but I still generally check both just to be sure.

Accommodation is the second biggest factor influencing the cost of visiting Greece. The good news is that Greece offers options for every budget, from affordable guesthouses to luxurious cliffside resorts.
Average Hotel Prices in Greece
Hostels and budget hotels: $30 – $80 per night

Santorini is one of the most famous islands in Greece and is known for its dramatic cliffs, whitewashed buildings, and blue-domed churches overlooking the Aegean Sea.
While Santorini is incredibly beautiful, it is also one of the most expensive destinations in Greece. If you’re dreaming of a hotel with caldera views like this be prepared to spend a pretty penny. Luxury cave hotels and caldera-view rooms can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars per night during peak summer season.
Budget Accommodation in Greece
Budget travelers can find plenty of affordable places to stay, especially in:
- Athens
- Crete
- Naxos
- Thessaloniki
- Nafplio
Average price: $40 – $70 per night
Hostels and family-run guesthouses are very common in Greece and often include breakfast. Airbnb’s are also great options as they generally offer reasonable prices and give you more space.
Use Booking.com Rewards and Mobile Discounts to Save on Hotels
Always check booking platforms like Booking.com that allow you to compare prices and find good deals on smaller boutique hotels. They also offer a rewards program where you get a discount after multiple bookings.
Almost all my accommodations booked in 2025 were through Booking.com or Airbnb and this year I’ve earned up to 20% off bookings through their genius program and have saved hundreds of dollars on my accommodations this year. I still always compare prices on Expedia and Hotels.ca but rarely end up booking accommodations through there.
Pro tip: Search for accommodations on the Booking.com app as they offer mobile only pricing that will save you money.
Mid-Range Hotels
Most travelers visiting Greece stay in mid-range boutique hotels.

Ferry Travel Tips
Book early for travel during the summer. Routes sell out quickly in July and August and there’s generally early booking discounts available if you book months in advance.
If you want to save money, consider slower ferries as they are usually cheaper.
Travel early in the morning as, sea conditions are often calmer, but be prepared in case your ferry is canceled. If you’re visiting the islands and returning home from Athens, make sure you plan to stay 2 nights minimum in Athens on your return. If your ferry is scheduled for the day before your flight and it gets canceled you may end up missing your flight as it can take a couple days to get back to Athens if ferries are canceled during rough seas.
Activities and Sightseeing Costs
Greece is filled with incredible historical sites, scenic beaches, and unforgettable tours.

For a more detailed breakdown, check out my complete Greece on a budget guide with practical tips to help you save money without sacrificing your experience.
Travel in shoulder season
Best months: May, June, September, October
You’ll enjoy great weather with fewer crowds and lower prices.
Choose affordable islands or explore the mainland
Islands: Naxos, Kefalonia, Corfu, Crete, Rhodes
Mainland: Nafplio, Kalamata, Parga, Halkidiki
These destinations offer beautiful beaches and great food at much lower prices.
You can also explore other affordable European beach destinations in my guide Top Affordable Beach Destinations in Europe You Need to Visit or my guide to the Best Affordable Travel Destinations, for a cost breakdown of some of the most budget-friendly destinations around the world.
Eat local food
Avoid touristy restaurants with aggressive menus outside. If someone is trying to usher you into their restaurant it’s probably overpriced and not going to be very good. Instead, look for smaller family run tavernas off the main tourist strips. For breakfast, a spanakopita (spinach pie) or tiropita (cheese pie) from a bakery.
Before choosing where to eat, I always check restaurant reviews on TripAdvisor or google maps and only visit places with good reviews. Never judge a restaurant by how it looks. Some of the most modern, nice looking restaurants have disappointment food, as their main focus is the atmosphere and some places that look like a hole in the wall have the most incredible food because they’re family run restaurants that have been around for decades.
