Naxos Town (Chora) is an excellent base for families, with a walkable waterfront, pedestrian-friendly streets, and plenty of restaurants and accommodations within easy reach. Agios Georgios Beach is located right beside town, making it easy to spend a day at the beach without worrying about transportation.
Families can also take advantage of the island’s bus network to reach popular beaches such as Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna, both known for their soft sand and shallow, clear water.

Crete is often considered a destination where you need a rental car, but I think Rethymno is one of the best exceptions.
If you’re visiting Crete without a car, I’d choose Rethymno over Chania. While Chania is undeniably beautiful, Rethymno offers something many families value even more: a long sandy beach right in town. That means you can walk from your hotel to the beach, restaurants, shops, and the Old Town without relying on transportation.
One of the things I love about Rethymno is how easy it feels. The beach stretches for miles along the waterfront, and the promenade is perfect for evening walks. Families can spend the day at the beach and then stroll into the Old Town for dinner without ever needing to get in a car.

5. Kos: Best for Easy Exploration
Of all the Greek islands on this list, Kos is one of the easiest to get around without a car.
What I love about Kos is how flat and stroller-friendly it is. Unlike some Greek islands where you’re constantly navigating hills and stairs, Kos Town is easy to walk around with strollers and young children. There are also dedicated cycling paths throughout parts of the island, making biking a popular way to get around.
If you stay in Kos Town you’ll find beaches, restaurants, shops, and historic sites all within a short distance. I especially like that you can combine beach time with sightseeing without spending much time on transportation (because collapsing strollers and lugging diaper bags onto a bus along with kids is not fun 😅).
However, the island’s bus network also makes it easy to reach some of the area’s most popular beaches if you want to venture beyond town.

6. Syros: Best for an Authentic Greek Island Experience
Syros feels very different from many of the other islands on this list. While places like Naxos and Paros are built around tourism, Syros feels like a real Greek town where people actually live year-round. That means you’ll find plenty of restaurants, bakeries, shops, pharmacies, and reliable transportation without the crowds found on some of the more popular islands.
I also found Syros to be one of the easier islands to navigate without a car thanks to its bus network and compact waterfront area. Families can spend time exploring Ermoupoli, relaxing at nearby beaches, and enjoying the island’s laid-back atmosphere without feeling like they need to rent a vehicle.
That said, don’t make the same mistake I did.
When I first visited Syros, I booked an Airbnb that looked close to the center of town on Google Maps. Technically, it was. What the map didn’t show very well was that getting there involved a steep uphill climb and lots of stairs. Thankfully, that trip was before I had kids because hauling a stroller up and down those streets every day would not have been fun.
If you’re visiting Syros with young children, I’d strongly recommend staying as close to the waterfront as possible. Before booking, switch to Street View and check the actual walking route from your accommodation to the restaurants and harbor. A five-minute walk can be completely different when it involves hills, stairs, and a stroller.

7. Agistri: Best Near Athens
If you’re looking for an easy island escape from Athens, Agistri is hard to beat.
What surprised me most about Agistri was how simple everything felt. Within an hour of leaving Athens, I was on a small island with pine forests, clear water, and beaches that were within walking distance of town. There was no need to coordinate buses, rent a car, or spend hours in transit.
For families, that’s a huge advantage. When you’re traveling with kids, sometimes the easiest destination ends up being the most enjoyable.
Most visitors stay in Skala (we did as well), where you’ll find a sandy beach, restaurants, cafes, and accommodations all within a short walk of one another. The beach is shallow and calm, making it a great option for younger children.
Agistri is smaller than the other islands on this list, so I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re looking for a packed sightseeing itinerary. But if your goal is a relaxed beach vacation where everything is easy, it’s one of my favorite islands near Athens.

Islands such as Sifnos, Hydra, Aegina, Leros, and Koufonisia can also work well depending on your travel style, where you stay, and how much you’re willing to rely on buses, taxis, or walking.
